Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
