UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
