A comprehensive search and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for two missing boats loaded with relief goods journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were had on board at least 9 crew members, according to a official statement.

The boats had been projected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with repeated national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety systems and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission commented.

The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the country.

That boat, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and food.

Broader Political Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from several representatives emphasizing the complicated nature of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to recent comments, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the vessels and secure the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
