This Horror Follow-Up <em>Influencers</em> Could Give Competing Streaming Thrillers a Bad Case of FOMO
“The entire situation smells like a cheap made-for-TV,” observes an opportunistic podcaster midway through the horror sequel Influencers. At that point, his tone is manipulatively dismissive of a guest whose outlandish story he previously said he trusted. Yet his assessment of what’s happening on screen isn't inaccurate. On its face, a pair of films on demand chronicling a young woman who insinuates herself into the worlds of online influencers before killing them feels like a modern-day version of a lurid yet cable-ready weekly TV movie. The wild thing regarding Influencers remains how much better it proves to be than plenty of its competition, irrespective of screen size. It’s the kind of thriller capable of giving other movies a serious bout of FOMO.
Revisiting the Original and Establishing the Scene
2022’s Influencer tracks the enigmatic CW (Cassandra Naud) as she methodically selects solo-traveling social media targets, entices them to their deaths, and conceals those murders (at least temporarily) by seizing control of their socials. The film leaves off (spoiler ahead) with CW stranded on a deserted island off the coast of Thailand, following her latest target, Madison (Emily Tennant), turns the tables against her.
This provides 2025's Influencers a degree of mystery, when returning writer-director Kurtis David Harder resumes with CW contentedly residing with her girlfriend Diane (Lisa Delamar) in Paris. On a journey to celebrate the couple’s one-year anniversary, British influencer Charlotte (Georgina Campbell) catches CW's attention and anger.
CW comments to Diane that someone ought to attempt leaving a device-obsessed influencer in a place with no technology and see if they can survive. Are we witnessing a backstory prequel? Was CW radicalized after witnessing the special treatment afforded a single fame-seeker?
Shifting Perspectives and Global Pursuits
The story’s perspective changes multiple times, eventually clarifying those early scenes’ chronological position. Harder catches up with Madison, who has been exonerated for carrying out CW's offenses, yet still encounters suspicion regarding her version of what happened, which includes the murder of Madison’s boyfriend. The film also follows Jacob (Jonathan Whitesell), living in Bali attempting to juice his career as part of a conservative-influencer power couple with Ariana (Veronica Long), though his chosen platform is bro-heavy streams, rather than the Instagram photos that normally capture CW's interest.
Naud remains immensely captivating in the part, a role that appears especially custom-fit for her talents. (She also designed CW's striking wardrobe.) Although the sequel’s screentime balance tips heavily toward CW — the first film felt more equally divided between her and Madison — it still functions as a story of rival investigators, as Madison and CW employ fake accounts, social media surveillance, and a seemingly limitless travel fund to pursue or evade one another. Then again, perhaps the vast resources aren't needed. Influencers have a talent for gaining access to luxurious locales at little cost, a skill which CW mirrors with her more overt scamming.
Resourceful Production and Visual Wanderlust
The filmmakers behind Influencers appear equally resourceful about finding stunning locations to visit, although they were likely less nefarious about it. The vast majority of the film appears to be shot on location, giving it a real-world weight that lingers even as many scenes involve a handful of actors of characters staring at computer or phone screens.
It’s the same principle which allowed the James Bond movies appear so consistently opulent for decades: Yes, big action and visual effects can show off a big budget, however just providing a travelogue of sorts to viewers also feels deeply filmic. This is especially fitting for a story so rooted in the coexisting surface-level allure and desperate hustle involved in producing jealousy-worthy digital content.
Every character in Bali, similar to those who were in Thailand in the original, seem to have access to impossibly chic modern bungalows; films exist concerning beach rescuers which don't feature as much aerial pool footage. These individuals have to convincingly inhabit these lush, far-flung locations to emphasize the uneasy irony of how frequently everyone — including the woman exacting revenge on the influencers’ narcissistic falseness — nonetheless spends plenty of time under the light of their devices.
Nuanced Portrayals and Tech-Savvy Tension
At the same time, Harder hasn’t authored a rant targeting the vacuousness of online fame. Though it is gratifying to watch CW exploit different internet celebrities, and a Hitchcockian sense of identification lets us to wish she doesn’t get caught, Harder is somewhat sympathetic to the major influencer characters. Previously, he keyed into the loneliness Madison felt during supposedly dream getaways. In this film, the director appears confident that just observing Jacob at work will make it clear that he is selling false masculinity to other doofuses; he resists caricaturing the character further. He even gives Jacob a degree of respect by showing his genuine loyalty to his girlfriend; he’s a hypocrite, yet Ariana is a collaborator in his double standards, not a victim of it.
The flip side of Harder’s even-keeled presentation means it may occasionally seem that he is acknowledging elements of contemporary digital culture without investigating them further. This is particularly evident regarding how he introduces artificial intelligence into the plot, an intriguing development which misses the psychological edge it deserves. The pluralized title for the film could offer fans of the first movie hope for a larger-scale escalation, and the movie ultimately delivers that, with an appropriately chaotic climax. But before that, it’s more like a sleek Hitchcock thriller than a wild-eyed, tech-addled Brian De Palma thriller. Influencers’ extensive use of real-world locations might also be what prevents it from seeming like pure nightmare fuel. The world might be saturated with content-churning influencers, online fraud, and self-serving tourism, but reality itself is still here, at least for now.
