Sheffield Wednesday supporters described Wednesday as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the Championship side entered financial administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.

Sheffield Wednesday are confronted with almost certain relegation after the league's punishment placed them at minus six points, 15 adrift of safety. Team members and employees have not been paid on time in five of the past seven months, compounding the club's instability.
The appointed administrators are now in charge of the process to sell Wednesday’s assets, including Hillsborough stadium, to recoup debts including tax liabilities. Soon after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were taken down in the stadium.

Coach's Outlook on Fresh Start
Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. Pedersen stated administration was required to embark on a new era.
The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, adding: “We knew from the last five, six, seven, eight months it cannot continue. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now there is a belief, a hope, there is a feeling of looking towards better days. Staff Insecurity
Club staff were emotional upon hearing the update, as the manager explained: “Uncertainty exists. Will wages be paid? What comes next? Will things improve? Or won't they? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”
Ongoing Financial Struggles
The club's condition worsened significantly in recent months after the former manager and players left following unpaid wages. The EFL expressed concern regarding financial health earlier this season.
Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, applying all revenue such as solidarity payments to deal with debts. With reports of an imminent winding-up order from HMRC, the owner exhausted alternatives.
Insolvency Practitioner's Comments
A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield appointed by Begbies Traynor said: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses for several years, with those losses historically funded by the former owner Mr Chansiri. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium as a whole, a positive development for fans.”
Government Reaction
The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy commented on the situation highlighted again of the need for the independent football regulator, which was signed into law this year. It should be active by the 2027-28 campaign.
“My club Wigan faced similar issues, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” she added.
Fan Response
Supporters avoided club shops and products this season with many absent during the Middlesbrough match as part of ongoing protests. Ahead of the Oxford game, officials urged fans to return.

The trust said it expected strong interest from buyers but had been working on a “fan-led takeover proposal” to ensure that “liquidation remains off the table”.
