The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
