The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in decades are being hailed as a "huge turning point" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the pathogen, according to researchers.

Another new antibiotic, developed by the pharmaceutical company GSK, gained clearance in close succession. This treatment, which is also used to treat UTIs, was demonstrated in studies to be effective against antibiotic-resistant forms of the gonorrhoea bacteria.
