We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
