Jailhouse Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He battled the legal system and the law triumphed.

Sixty days subsequent to receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now looks headed to prison.

Expected Incarceration

The convicted instigator – who's been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of legal procedures and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, during mounting talk that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security prison.

Historical Statements on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the right-wing former paratrooper displayed minimal compassion for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we give these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to wind up there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Prison Location Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious effort to dissuade the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, claimed he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and worried his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal problems – the outcome of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is extremely serious. He will not be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It will be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the standard of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing forty inmates: “That’s virtually one square meter per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the terrible food,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.

Writing in a prominent daily, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“It represents an wrong that gnaws the spirits of many people in Brazil,” he stated.

Mixed General Opinion

This could be correct considering the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the spirits of millions other people who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and even scheming to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting leader's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain respectful care – but respectful treatment in prison. He can’t carry on being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time celebrating the harsh handling of prisoners, had suddenly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that basic rights are not for offenders – opted to tour a prison to discover what conditions are actually like,” he remarked.

“He is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, demeaning handling”.

Possible Jail Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 inmates, his expected assigned facility seems to be a close jail for officers and other “special” inmates called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the stunning presidential palace, about 12 miles away.

As per sources, the cell Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and even a cooler in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” information suggested.

Ideological Reactions

He denounced the rumoured idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
