Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Rebuke
Personalities from across the political divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
This is a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks
Some Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of another political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
