Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
